I gathered pictures of anorexic supermodels from google and bing.com. Then i copied and pasted all of them on word and printed them. After that i helped glue and paste all of the pictures on a red poster.

Today i learned about teenage pregnancy. Teenage pregnancy happens to teens ages 15-19 and in New London their are 1633 teens who have young children. I also learned that most teens are falling behind in school and they have no time to do what they want to do.

Wealth and Power: Is It Balanced?
By: Debbie Florez
I was once told that we are all equal, but if you know about wealth and power, you would know that it is not evenly distributed in our society. If even the distribution of corporate wealth is unimaginably uneven and concentrated in the hands of a few giant companies, why are some people surprised that our conventional food systems leads to...

What is going on in the U.S.?
Do you feel that you have power to act in your community and do you have equal rights as a U.S. citizen? Today’s world is filled with inequalities and exploitation of the powerless by the powerful. Who should we trust? How do we know what our money is being spent on? Today’s food system has taking a downfall recalls, process foods, and fast food...

Being quiet, does not mean that I don’t have a voice.
(What?) You think, just ‘cause I’m quiet,
I have no self-defense?
You think, just ‘cause I’m quiet,
I’m a bitch and a slut?
You think just ‘cause I’m quiet,
It’s okay for you to talk shit?
And that I’m just gonna let you get away with it?
Well, that’s not how I roll.
I don’t know you; you don’t know me.
So don’t be sittin’ there...

REALITY By Amy Underwood
REALITY
The reality of not knowing how my life will turn out, always troubles me. They tell me education leads me to the path of success, but as a young adult I realize in today’s society that success is gauged by the money in our pockets. So what’s there to do….get a job?
Growing up I didn’t have to worry if I was going to eat or not. Coming home to the smell of Spanish rice, beans and...

1.
Sweat runs down my neck in the summer heat
The quiet on the field- the sound of work
Driving away from the field I look at our accomplishments
How many others can say they grow their own food?

All You Hear By Debbie Florez (Winner of Spoken...
All you hear, is music played so loud, you can barely hear yourself think. Brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, abuela and abuelo talking and joking in Spanish so fast, its like you are running to catch up with the catch phrase.
All you see is mouths moving as they talk, people dancing to the beat, and everyone having a good time with each other. Parents are chatting over the music, sharing stories...

Abstract Art Experience
Today was my second time back with F.R.E.S.H. Voices. We went to downtown to an art studio where we were introduced to a Spaniard legend about a man named “Donkey Hoto”. He was a man who had gone insane and had a stubby sidekick. This character inspired a lot of art and photography. Some of which was displayed in the art studio itself. We were later brought to the back of the studio where we sat...

My experience with F.R.E.S.H.
I’ve been working with FRESH since July 2009. The first time I heard about FRESH was through a friend of mine, who goes to the same school as me. My friend no longer works with FRESH, but when she did, she described the things that they do here. She told me that they grew organic vegetables and fruits on a farm, and that they harvest them, and sell them. She also told me that they would do...

My poetry experience
For the past few weeks, I have been learning about spoken word poetry, and I have watched performances of it, and I have read some spoken word poems. I was told that I would have to write my own poem about the topics of racism, discrimination, food, my own life experiences, etc.
At first, I was a little nervous about it, because poetry isn’t really my passion, and I wasnt sure if I would be...

When MLK Day comes January 17th ask yourself, what...
The Civil Rights Movement started in 1955 and ended in 1968. About 43 years ago. My grandmother was a teen during this movement and she’s in her late 60’s today. When I think of it like this it wasn’t that long ago this Big movement happened. 43 years ago, the movement has ended but the same stuff our elders fought for hasn’t.
I’d like to share words said by Fred...

new adventure!
I’m joining forces with Jess, Ranita, and FRESH Voices. I’ve been making a lot of connections the past year and I want the youth to start making more of these connections. I never thought food was political, I never thought food could have anything to do with sexism or racism, I never thought about food other than the fact that we eat it and some people don’t get to have it. I didn’t question why....

what i'd like to see happen
For the past few weeks I’ve been brainstorming a lot! I’ve been brainstorming so much I’ve been getting really bad headaches later on but it’s been worth it, I think. I mainly work with kids that go to school at Jenning Elementary. They come to the community garden and I (and sometimes me and Anique [education coordinator] and sometimes just Anique) talk to them about...

Privilege check
Not everyone can buy organic milk, eggs, meat, cheese, or vegetables. There’s a lot of privilege in the statement that it’s easy and everyone can do it. At FRESH we provide really cheap organic vegetables and we make those vegetables accessible to those who can’t get out to the grocery store and farmer’s markets. We’re practically giving them away for free but that...

All Youth Gathering 11-10-10
Hey this is Debbie Florez from FRESH voices. Our All Youth Gathering on November 10, 2010, was also a great experience. We cooked first a Italian dinner. We had lasagna, mozzarella sticks, salad and cookies. The food was scrumshus. We all worked together preparing it. After the cooking we had a workshop with Kris. She taught us about misogyny and inequality towards women. She showed us statistics...

Hey, this is Debbie from FRESH voices. The All youth Gathering was a success as always! It was on October 27, 2010. We cooked quesadillas, nachos, and candy apples. We all helped out each other and the food was amazingly delicious! It had lots of flavor and texture; it was the perfect combination of everything. After the fantastic food, we had a workshop with Sea Tea Improv. They taught us...

North East Farming Association Conference...
The NOFA Conference Presentation in New Haven, CT went really well. We presented infront of a crowd of 25 and got really good feedback. Everyone loved the warm up we did and it got people to warm up and break out of their shells. Instead of the traditional powerpoint we had a velcrow board with pictures that stuck to it. Each picture helped us give them a visual of what we do here at F.R.E.S.H....

NOFA Conference: FRESH Voices
Hey. Soo The NOFA Conference was another success! The FRESH Voices, Chaurielle, Amy, and I did a presentation with an example of how a youth’s process with the program happens. As always we did a fantastic job. People appreciated that we hand made the project rather than using the typical powerpoint. Everyone had questions at the end and we answered them to the best of our ability. It was a cool...

What I Learned in Bioneers? Read on to find out ;)
Hey. The Bioneers Conference was great! We learned lots of things! Everyday of the conference we “took a sip” of knowledge, as the host said. I learned the importance of conserving the planet and different ways of doing it. I also learned about different organizations that have a mission to help out the community, economy, the ecosystem, and the world in general. I never knew people were so...

What's New with F.R.E.S.H. Voices
since the beginning we’ve made so much progress. We’ve had interviews, planning events, running successful events, and creating workshops for future conventions. Right now we have set up a new workshop using visuals (such as drawings) and through oral presentation. Compared to using the tradtional powerpoint presentation. Everything is going well and we’re pretty sure this...
